The beds...

Many people have asked me what the raised beds in the garden will look like and I found these pictures on the Sunset website and they are pretty much exactly what mine will look like. I think the ones in the pics are 4'x8' and ours will be 3'x6' but pretty much built the same.

I will also be installing sections of PVC on each ends and side as seen in this photo to serve dual purposes...

...one reason for the PVC is to be able to install "hoops" for birdnetting or row covers when need be as seen in the photo below. The other purpose for the PVC is to hold the chicken tractor in place when moved from bed to bed.

Our chickens will not be housed in a traditional coop, they will be moved from bed to bed to work the soil, pick out weeds and bugs and fertilize the soil as well. I not only want to have good cared for chickens and the best tasting eggs but I want my chickens to work for me :)

wow 2 posts in one day...what is this world coming to?

While were were working in the farm portion of the backyard on Saturday we decided to let the boys forage around in there for a while. They took great joy in getting a mouthful of dirt and then going to the water bucket to wash it down. Here they are trying to see who could get their head all the way to the bottom of the bucket. Notice they are up on their toes... Weeds WERE plentiful on Saturday before we pulled them all so we let them eat whatever they wanted...

They are almost 8 months old now and I know I am biased but my boys are so very handsome!

My cousin comes through BIG time!!!!

Dragonfly Farms now has a gate! Woo hoo! Saturday work day was a success despite being down a person but with my cousin John coming over and building and installing our new gate we are in great shape. All the weeds have been cleared and now I am in the process of leveling the ground. Here is John putting in the last screw for the latch :)
MUCH MORE to come! :D

I have lost my way....

Nothing worse than a farmer that has lost his or her way, but I am slowly getting back on track. My focus had to change for a while in order to get an old roommate out and move a new one in but now that we have succeeded in that I want to be up and running in time for the fall planting season. This Saturday is a small scheduled work day on the farm to get all those nasty weeds out of the backyard, it will just be me, Nic, Aunt Shirley and Pa Fuller (who also has some crawling under the house jobs to do.) The plan is to get the weeds pulled and start leveling out the ground. The next step is to lay out the weed fabric, build the rasied beds and then place my order of pea gravel...12 thousand pounds of it to be exact! :D More to come after this weekend's work.
